Common metal carport sizes

enclosed metal carport sizes

If you are asking the question, “Which of the standard metal carport sizes is suitable for me?” The answer is that there is not a one-size-fits-all metal carport. How many vehicles do you have? How much storage space do you need in your carport? Are your local zoning laws going to limit the size of your carport? These questions will change which carport is right for you. If you are wondering which of the portable metal carport sizes you should invest in, here are some questions and answers you need to know.

How Wide Should My Carport Be?

Your carport should not be less than 12 feet wide. A 12-foot wide metal carport is large enough to park a standard car and avoid hitting your doors when you get in or out. The size you need varies on what you are storing.

What Height Should My Carport Be?

Your metal carport should at least be 7-8 feet high, but a 10-foot-high ceiling is common as well.

One Car Metal Carport Sizes

Your metal carport should be 4 feet wider than the item you are storing. The standard width of a one-car metal garage is 12 feet wide, but you can get 18-foot wide metal carports for more storage space. The standard length of a single-car garage is 20 feet long, but you can get up to 50-foot-long single carports. If you plan on storing a pickup, you should opt for an 18-foot wide garage that is 25 more feet long.

Two Car Metal Carport Sizes

The standard widths for two-car metal carports are 20 and 22 feet wide. These widths will only fit two small cars, so a 24-foot wide carport will better suit if you plan to store your vehicles. If you want extra space for your things, get a 26 or 28-foot-wide carport. A wider carport allows additional space beside your car to store your items.

A two-car metal carport length varies, but it should be at least 24 or 30 feet long if you are storing your cars. If you want extra space on end or have a pickup, opt for a 25 or 30-foot-long carport. The little extra space is great for storing a truck or any toolboxes that you need.

Three Car Metal Carport Sizes

Your metal carport should be 30 – 38 feet wide for normal-sized vehicles and trucks. At a minimum, your 3-car metal carport should be 26 feet wide. Twenty-six feet will only fit three compact cars, so we recommend a wider garage.

How long should your 3-car metal carport be? Again, this depends on the vehicles you are storing. A 20-foot-long carport will work for your basic cars. Get a longer carport if you have a pickup or want more space. Metal carports sizes vary from 20 – 50 feet long carports.

Do you want a unique carport? With our array of custom metal carport options, you can color-match your house, so your carport fits right at home on your property! Why settle for a standard metal carport when you can choose from 14 colors and our three styles of metal carport sizes?

Metal RV Carport Sizes

RVs are not cheap. It is essential to protect your investment! A metal carport will protect your RV from damaging weather like hail, rain, and snow. You can purchase a fully-enclosed RV carport or a partially-enclosed RV carport. Your RV carport should be at least 14 feet tall. The length and width of your RV carport will depend on the size of your motorhome. The two most common widths are 12 and 18 feet. Standard RV carport lengths vary from 35 to 40 feet.

Metal Carport Styles

A carport is a structure used for limited protection from the weather, primarily for vehicles. Carports can either be free-standing or attached to a wall. You can move a portable carport with little work. There are several types of carports available. Here are the main ones.

Gable Roof Carport

A gable roof carport has two downward-sloping roof sides that extend from the bottom of the eaves to the ridge. You can get a standard gable or a Dutch gable. Gable carports are generally more expensive than flat-roof carports, but that comes with benefits. A gable carport will stand up to snow weight since the snow can slide off. You can purchase wooden or metal gable carports. Typically, metal carports use aluminum or steel. Also, you can customize your gable carport with many color options.

Flat Roof Carport

Flat roof carports are not entirely flat, despite the names. A flat roof carport is slightly angled to prevent stagnant water pools, which will damage your carport. Flat roof carports are the most economical carport and are easy to install. These carports are generally made from metal or wood. Flat roofs are usually used as an economical car storage solution for smaller metal carport sizes.

Enclosed Carport

Enclosed carports have closed sides for more car protection. An open-air carport still exposes your car to temperatures and blowing debris. An enclosed carport will protect your car from blowing debris and is more structurally sound. Usually, the larger metal carport sizes have enclosed sides to stand up to the weather better.

Hip Roof Carport

A hip roof has four roof sides that slope down to the walls with a slope. A hip roof carport is the most robust carport to protect your car! It has no vertical sides to the roof, unlike gables. A hip roof looks like four triangles attached. A hip roof carport requires less diagonal bracing than a gable roof carport since a hip roof is self-bracing. Since hip roofs do not have flat sides to catch the wind, they are more stable than gable roofs. A Hip roof carport is more complex to build, which means it will be more expensive than a gable or flat roof carport.

Dutch Gable Carport

What is a Dutch gable? A Dutch gable is a mixture of a hip roof and a gable roof, featuring eaves and a hip roof. With this roof design, you get the best of both worlds! This design provides extra shade to keep your car cool in the hot summer weather.

Boxed Eave Style

This traditional A-frame style is accompanied by roofing panels that run from front to back. This allows rain, and other debris to fall off the side or end easily. This allows for a longer and more traditional look while still giving you an excellent shelter for vehicles.

Vertical Roof Style

This ultra-strong carport brings together the strength and power of a cover that will always be ready to protect your car. The vertical orientation of the roofing panels creates a strong frame. This design also helps to avoid rust or other damage.

Does your area receive extreme weather? Do you want your carport to match your home? If you answered yes to either of these questions, a metal carport is for you! Metal is highly durable when compared to other options. Metal isn’t affected by termites, rot, or pests. Metal is resistant to weather damage and will last longer if maintained. On the flip side, wood does not rust. However, if you get an aluminum carport, you don’t have to worry about rust!

Does my Carport Need a Foundation?

Technically no. You can set your carport on the ground and use anchors to keep it in place. However, this is not the best option! Here are some of the metal carport foundation choices.

Concrete Slab Carport Foundation

A concrete foundation is the best foundation for a carport. A concrete slab foundation will keep your possessions dry, clean, and safe. You can pour the concrete slab yourself, but we recommend hiring a contractor. You must know a few skills before pouring if you want to pour it.

A concrete contractor will understand how to properly slope and joint your concrete slab foundation to optimize the water runoff. If your concrete slab is not poured correctly, your carport will have an unstable base and need to be redone. Redoing a concrete slab is more expensive than getting a contractor to pour the foundation. We recommend hiring a professional, but if you have the skills, go ahead and do it yourself!

Asphalt Carport Foundation

Asphalt is excellent for a driveway but not as good as concrete for a carport foundation. Asphalt is flexible, so if you buy one of the biggest metal carport sizes, the posts may sink into the asphalt. If you plan on an asphalt foundation, you will need to reinforce the asphalt with concrete. Asphalt needs to be sealed periodically, throwing another wrench in the process. If you have a small metal carport to install on your driveway, an asphalt foundation will work, but it comes with more maintenance.

Gravel Carport Foundation

A gravel foundation is the best draining foundation for your carport. Gravel shifts over time but is relatively easy to re-level, so it is not a big deal. You must use rebar or auger anchors to keep your carport level and secure on a gravel foundation. Gravel foundations are relatively inexpensive, making them a popular carport foundation choice.

Dirt Carport Foundation

If you only need your metal carport as a backyard shed or garden storage building, a ground base might be all you need. You must level the ground and anchor the carport using rebar or auger anchors. If none of these issues concern you, use a dirt foundation! Dirt foundations work, but they will get wet during a rainstorm, and you can kiss your grass goodbye.
